I have been a long time fan of Shwin Designs Patterns. I have read the Shwin and Shwin blog for a long time and made many of the Shwin Designs baby and kid patterns. I love that there are so many free patterns and the patterns in general are revisited to show you different ways that you can use or modify them. I also love her style. I was pretty bummed when she started doing women’s patterns that I was out of her size range.
She recently started a Facebook group. After I joined I asked her to consider expanding her size range. She said that she had already planned that for this year and that her next patterns would have a bigger range. Those next patterns are here, and they do!
The Shwin Designs 909 Jacket and the Carolina tee released last week. Both have a size range of XXS-XXXL, covering a bust size from 30-52. I tested the 909 Jacket. I made the XXL version. I was provided the 909 jacket pattern for testing purposes. Opinions expressed are my own. The 909 Jacket is designed for knit. It’s a trim fit with an asymmetrical zipper, collar, and arm cuffs. It was quick and easy to construct. I have done zippers before but not many. This one is a separating zipper and would make a good first zipper project.
The back of the jacket has a really neat triangle inserts for contrast fabric. I used some Lillestoff roses for the inserts, collar, and cuffs. For the jacket I used Stenzo Mosiacs in Blue from Mabel Madison. The blue colorway is only in stock in Poplin now but There are other colorways in knit including this beautiful summery orange and dreamy pink and purple.
I used a Parka/Dual Separating Zipper on mine. It is a separating zipper with two zipper heads. I can unzip it all the way open from top to bottom. I can also unzip from bottom to top all the way up to the neckline if I wanted. (Don’t do that, it looks silly :P) What I can also do is unzip part way from the bottom to have a shirt peeking out. That looks cute I think and works with the asymmetrical zipper. She has another example of this in her listing.
This 909 Jacket is soft and cozy and perfect for running around on dreary cool spring days. I have sported it for the past couple of weekends. I love wearing it and its super cute. I purchased the other new pattern, The Carolina Tee on release day. I am excited to make that one up. I’m really happy that Shiwin Designs has a wider size range now and I can’t wait to see what is next!
