I was provided a copy of this pattern for review. Opinions expressed are my own.
I was honored to be given the opportunity to review Pippa’s Women’s Plus from Create Kids Couture. The pattern comes in size 1x to 5x covering a bust size from 42in-59in. It’s also available in Women’s XS-XL and Girls 6mo-8. The size range is amazing! My bust measurement is 45 inches so I chose the 2x size to sew up.
The pattern was a lot of fun to sew. When you first cut it out the main pattern pieces are similar to a large half circle. It’s really hard to imagine at that state that it will magically transform itself into a super flattering top, but it totally does! The pattern is listed as an intermediate. I think a confident beginner could easily sew this up. The instructions were very clear and complete. Make sure to check the materials list. You need some elastic thread and a small piece of fusible web. The only slightly tricky part for me is the shirring. They have a fantastic video available here if you have never done it before. It really is not hard at all but you have to prepare your elastic thread and machine which takes a couple of minutes and I always forget how to load my bobbin so I have to refresh on that =) There are several machine specific videos on youtube so I can get one for my machine by searching for “shirring Brother” on youtube.
For the fabric on this one I used one of the Designer Overstock Modal Cotton Spandex fabrics from Girl Charlee. I really like this fabric and have been buying it up. It has a nice drape and weight to it and its nice and soft. I used a large tone on tone chevron print. It looks like they do not have this specific print in stock but lots of good choices. The Poncho can be made in knit or woven. If you have never sewn with knits before this is a great pattern to start with. There are no bindings or cuffs that needs stretched to fit so it sews up just like a woven. You can even sew it with a straight stitch! I recommend if using woven to use an apparel woven with some nice drape. Girl Charlee has some specialty wovens that would be great for this too. If looking other places, fabric like Rayon, Crepe De Chine, or Peachskin would be good woven choices.
I think the shape of this is super flattering on me and would be on many body types. I love the loose flowy arms. The shirring is just enough to pull in the underbust but not too much. It’s super comfortable and I feel very confident wearing it. Due to the volume on top I prefer to pair something like this with a more streamlined bottom. Skinny jeans at most lengths would be a good choice. I would also pair it with a pencil skirt or even a long streamlined maxi. You could make it more casual or dressy depending on the fabric used.
I am thrilled with how this turned out and already have another planned in woven =) Pick up your copy of the Create Kids Couture Pippa’s Women’s Plus Poncho Here! Make sure to download their app to be notified of special sales and deals!
